BE FRANK: Fund-raising Campaign
The “Be Frank” Campaign by CARIF is inspired by Frank Chong, a cancer survivor, who has done what was seemingly impossible, to run the world’s most challenging Ultra-Marathon, the Comrades Marathon in South Africa with a distance of 86.9km in 11 hours and 30 minutes.

Jazz Evening with Shareen Ramli
Claire’s father was diagnosed with cancer and she felt lost. She called a fellow Assunta alumni who happened to work in CARIF, and found the right doctor who has successfully treated her father. So when Claire heard about the “Be Frank” Campaign, she and her husband, Nicholas Bloy took the challenge up and they organised the “Be Frank” Jazz evening.
It was a memorable evening when the guests were serenaded with jazz artist, Shareen Ramli’s renditions of a selection of love songs at No Black Tie on the 3rd of July 2013. Apart from a scrumptious Japanese themed buffet dinner, a live auction including one of a kind items such as an evening with Shareen Ramli’s jazz performance, Paul Neukirch of The Food Studio who has offered to cook at a private event, an Alma BB Louis Vuitton handbag courtesy of Louis Vuitton, Belladonna earrings from Tara Thadani of Tsura, one-of-a-kind painting by Lim Wei Ling and a silk and lace Notte Marchesa cocktail dress from Phoebe Yap of TriBeCa. On top of that, an impromptu auction of a “Lasagne Bake-off” competition was thrown-in to spice things up.
The couple has definitely taken the “BE FRANK” campaign up a notch with such creativity! Claire and Nicholas Bloy raised more than RM 100,000 for cancer research at CARIF. Kudos and thank you to Claire, Nicholas and all of their friends!

For each day that they did not smoke, their colleagues pledged a donation to CARIF, and so far, more than RM25, 000 has already been raised.
“You’ve Got Punk-ed, Guys!” and thank you, Accenture for your generosity!

Yogathon by Joey Liang
Lack of exercise is another major reason why cancer and other non-communicable diseases (like heart disease and diabetes) are on the rise. Why not beat cancer with yoga?
Joey Liang, a yoga instructor was greatly affected when a close friend was diagnosed with cancer. So, on the 29th June 2013, Joey stepped up to “Be Frank” by raising funds together with 60 participants at the Piano Lounge, Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC).
The 2 hour yoga session started off with a few words from Joey where she emphasized the importance to “Be Frank” about cancer and living a healthy lifestyle. When her close friend was diagnosed with cancer, she was devastated and miserable. With the support from her friends and family, she got back on track and turned to yoga. We thank Joey for coming forward for the first “Be Frank” Yogathon! It was yet another fun-filled event where “sweat and tears” were involved in the effort in supporting CARIF. With that, more than RM7,000 has been raised.
Greatest gratitude given to Joey and all the participants for spending their valuable time to join forces in contributing to cancer research!

“As we turn ten, we thank everyone who have stood by our efforts, for understanding and supporting our cause. We did it because we believe in a future of long healthy lives. We did it because we hope that everyone diagnosed will be fortunate enough to have hope. We did it because we hope Malaysian scientists and doctors would come together and share their research efforts. CARIF’s work is possible because of the support of Tun Dr Mahathir and our donors, supporters and collaborators. Together we can build a world free from the fear of cancer. Support cancer research in Malaysia. Support CARIF,” said YM Tunku Tan Sri Ahmad Yahya.
Hope Lives Here encapsulates CARIF’s belief that the answer for cancer prevention and treatment lies in our very own population, in our very own genes, in our health habits and in Malaysia’s own biodiversity.

Terry Fox Run KL
The Terry Fox Run, named after the young man who inspired these events, has been held in KL for the last 20 years in Kuala Lumpur and has attracted thousands of Malaysians from all walks of life. This year marks the 10th year CARIF has been selected as the sole beneficiary of funds raised from the Terry Fox RUn KL in Malaysia since 2003.
Terry Fox was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer. His right leg was amputated above the knee. Whilst in hospital, Terry was so moved by the suffering of cancer patients, especially children and this inspired him to run across Canada (a distance of 8,500 kilometres) to raise money and awareness for cancer research. He called his journey the “Marathon of Hope”. With courage and determination, he ran 42 kilometres a day for 143 consecutive days covering a total of 5,373 kilometres. Terry was forced to abandon his run as the cancer spread to his lungs and he eventually passed away at the age of 21.
To commemorate his brave attempt, a Canadian entrepreneur, Isadore Sharp decided to organise a run that carried the same mission as the Marathon of Hope – to raise funds for the purpose of finding a cure for cancer. Since the first Terry Fox Run in 1981, more than RM1.3 billion has been raised. More than 2 million runners participate each year around the world, in aid of cancer research. The Kuala Lumpur edition of the event started in 2001, attracted participants of all ages and has raised over RM1 million.
The event itself has grown and now encompasses side event such as charity auction conducted at the launch of the run. The run also attracts the support of celebrities such as Ida Nerina and the ever popular Datuk Yasmin Yusuf and is supported by an increasing number of caring corporate citizens.
Since 2003, CARIF has been the sole beneficiary of the Terry Fox Run Kuala Lumpur, receiving RM1,279,104.40. In 2010 alone, CARIF received RM220,758.95. All proceeds from the run are used in research programmes to improve cancer screening, to find new cures, to engage the public and patients in cancer awareness programmes and to advocate cancer-related issues.
