Cancer is not exactly a topic that one will want to talk about in public and is often a social taboo, especially among the women. Expensive, pain and death; is always associated with cancer as there is a lack of awareness that cancer is treatable and preventable.
Inspired by the “Barbershop Programme” in the USA which has successfully raised awareness about health programmes among the African American Men (who spend and average of 3 hours per week at the hairdressers salons), Cancer Research Malaysia has launched a pilot programme to train hairdressers to be “Boob Buddies” and to deliver key breast cancer awareness messages to their female clients. The hairdressers are trained to approach their clients in a more friendly and casual manner, thus creating a comfortable environment to promote early detection and screening.
Funded by the Berjaya Cares Foundation since 2012 and in collaboration with the Malaysian Hairdressers Association (MHA), we have trained 30 hairdressers to deliver key breast cancer awareness messages to their female clients. Despite this being the first community health awareness programme involving hairdressers in Malaysia, the programme has reached 2,000 individuals from 2013 to 2014, many of whom were not aware of breast cancer.
The second year of the programme will start soon, with the next training for hairdressers scheduled for 21st Apr 2014.

Cancer Research Malaysia has launched a pilot study to train youth (18-25 years) to deliver key cancer awareness messages to their peers.
Funded by the Berjaya Cares Foundation and in partnership with Taylor’s University, Sunway University and Saito College, we have trained 75 students (deleted “to be cancer champs”) to deliver key cancer awareness messages to student communities through innovative means such as video, posters and interactive games. In total, the youths have reached out to 2,000 peers through various activities including conducting cancer awareness carnivals at their respective institutions as well as through social media platform.

Cancer Research Malaysia is currently calling out to all industrial nurses to join us to improve cancer awareness while promoting early screening amongst the low-income women workforce. In the next half of the year, the programme hopes to reach women working in factories in Shah Alam area and if the programme is effective, we anticipate for the involvement of more nurses and factories nationally.
Funded by the Berjaya Cares Foundation and in partnership with Malaysian Occupational Health Nurses Association and Qualitas Health, we have trained 42 nurses to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and to encourage women at their clinics to undergo mammogram screening. To date, the programme has reached out to 1,800 women.
